The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service Director Tony Nakazawa has named Julie Cascio home economist for the Copper River/Mat Su district.

The position will provide leadership for development and delivery of home economics programs to both adult and youth audiences, including food science, nutrition, family relations and child development, family resource management, clothing and textiles, and related areas consistent with clientele needs and state and national extension initiatives.

äóìCascioäó»s extensive work experience serving adults, youth and families makes her the ideal person to create diverse and effective educational programs in home economics,äó? Nakazawa said.

Most recently, Cascio worked as a substitute teacher for the Mat-Su Borough School District. She has also worked for the Women, Infant and Children Supplemental Food Program in Oregon and Head Start program in Nevada.

In addition, Cascio has formerly worked for Alaska extension as a fill-in home economics program assistant for the Kenai Peninsula district. She also brings extension experience from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she was a short-term home economist. She holds a masteräó»s of education from Oregon State Universityäó»s School of Home Economics and Education.

äóìThe Mat-Su has been without a home economist for some time, and Iäó»m excited about finding out what the current needs of the people are in the Mat-Su and Copper River areas,äó? Cascio said.

Cascio will fulfill her duties as home economist out of the Palmer district extension office.
