The Graduate School is accepting proposals from departments for a special event activity between December 2004 and June 2005.

The Arthur J. Schaible Memorial Cultural Enrichment Fund is awarded each year to provide funding in the memory of Arthur J. Schaible for a special activity which serves to enrich the cultural life at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Examples of activities are a lecture, performance, literary reading or publication, visiting professor or speaker, or special event.

Proposals should be submitted to Department Heads for signature and forwarded to the Graduate School. The proposal should include the type of event, name of speaker, lecturer, performer(s), date of event, amount requested, and how funds will be used, i.e. travel expenses. The sponsoring department will be responsible for coordinating the event, including travel paperwork, catering, and advertising.

Arthur Schaible was born in 1906 in Walvis Bay, Southwest Africa, the son of American missionaries. He returned to the U.S. as a teen, and earned his medical degree from Northwestern University. He accepted a position with the Alaska Native Service Hospital in Tanana and moved to Alaska in 1938. With the coming of World War II, demand for trained doctors brought him to Fairbanks where he began his association with the Fairbanks Clinic - an association he kept until his retirement in 1971. In 1949, Schaible married Mrs. Druska Carr, but tragically lost his wife to a fire in the Lathrop Building in downtown Fairbanks. In 1969, Schaible married Grace Berg, a prominent Fairbanks attorney. He was appointed by Governor Egan to an eight-year term on the University of Alaska Board of Regents in 1961. In 1971, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Elmhurst College of Illinois and the following year earned an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Alaska. He served as chairman of the board of the Alaska National Bank of the North and the Fairbanks Medical Center Building Association and served on the Board of Directors for Alaska Airlines. Dr. Schaible died in 1980 at the age of 74.
