CASA vounteers are trained community members who speak up for abused and neglected children in court. CASA volunteers believe that children deserve to grow up in a safe, nurturing, permanent home. The CASA program in Fairbanks has not held a training in over two years. The main qualification is a sincere concern for the well being of children. The volunteer must be a mature adult of sound character with good verbal and written communication skills. The CASA volunteer must be able to interact and talk with people of various educational and ethnic backgrounds. An essential charctersitic is the ability to be objective and nonjudgemental. Volunteers are assigned to one or two cases under the supervision of the child’s guardian ad litem. Volunteers are asked to commit to the duration of the case. On average, CASA volunteers give about 12 hours a month.
