University of Alaska Fairbanks faculty are exploring the concept of service-learning this week.

The Faculty Development program sponsored workshops will take place Monday, Aug. 22 with Professor Patti Clayton, founding coordinator of the Service-Learning Program and assistant director of the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning at NC State University.

As part of UAF’s tripartite mission, faculty members participate in a wide range of community service activities. The concept of service-learning takes their charge one step further by including undergraduate students in their outreach efforts, either through traditional volunteer service or by involving students in a service project for a community group.

Introduction to Service Learning will take place Monday, Aug. 22, from 10-11:30 a.m. in Wood Center rooms C&D. The presentation is open to deans, directors, department chairs, interested faculty and students. This is an interactive PowerPoint presentation to encourage the integration of service learning into courses and student activities.

Service Learning 101 will take place from 2-5 p.m. in Wood Center conference rooms C&D and is for faculty who have a specific course they would like to develop.

Clayton will also assist in the evaluation of the Faculty Development program Tuesday, Aug. 23. Deans, directors and department chairs can participate in one of the following sessions.

1-2 p.m. - Deans and Directors, Chancellor’s Conference Room, 330 Signers’ Hall
2-3 p.m. - Department Chairs, Chancellor’s Conference Room, 330 Signers’ Hall
3:30-4:30 p.m. - Department Chairs, Runcorn Conf. Rm. - 300 Natural Sciences Facility
