Scholarships benefit many at UAF

More than $500,000 in privately funded scholarships is awarded to UAF students each year. Scholarships have a tremendous impact on the lives of Alaskan students and are made possible through the generosity of individual and corporate donors.

Students planning to attend any UAF campus during the 2006-2007 academic year will need to apply for scholarships before Feb. 15 at www.uaf.edu/finaid/ or call 474-5372 for more information.

Recent donors include:

Usibelli Coal Mine recently contributed $75,000 in support of the engineering program and $125,000 for the Usibelli Honors Scholarship.

NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) of Fairbanks established their fourth endowed scholarship for UAF students touched by mental illness. NAMI contributed $12,500 and the gift will be matched by unrestricted funds from the Chancelloräó»s Legacy Fund. This newest fund will benefit rural campus students, including those attending the Tanana Valley Campus.

The Pythian Sisters has established the Alexis M. Buskirk Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is to help students at UAF with epilepsy purchase textbooks.

Beaver Sports contributed $10,000 to continue building the Beaver Sports Whisenhant Ski Scholarship endowment.

Summit Consulting Services, Inc. gave a $10,000 gift in support of the Alaska Native Science Engineering Program (ANSEP) program at UAF.

Kennecott Greens Creek Mining Company recently donated a $9,000 gift in support of the Kennecott Minerals Co. Recruiting Scholarship at UAF.
