Some e-mail accounts were recently the target of a credit card phishing scam. The fraudulent e-mail, which most people received Nov. 30, included the Cornerstone staff and faculty newsletter banner on the top and the bear logo at the bottom. The message asked users to verify credit/debit card information to avoid PolarExpress ID service interruption. This e-mail was not sent from a university-affiliated department. If you provided credit/debit card information, you will want to contact your bank or credit card company.
Phishing is a term used to describe the method of using a fraudulent e-mail to fish for personal and financial information online. The University of Alaska will not send unsolicited e-mails requesting this type of information.
