The University of Alaska Fairbanks/University of the Arctic Office for International Polar Year Education and Outreach has launched an new website.

This Education and Outreach Office will serve as a facilitator for education and outreach in the International Polar Year 2007-2008 (IPY). It will:

-- provide information on University of Alaska Fairbanks and University of the Arctic IPY activities;
-- provide support to UAF IPY research projects seeking education and outreach programs; and
-- coordinate education and outreach projects within the UArctic cluster designated by the IPY International Programme Office.

International Polar Year is a special international research program on the Earth’s polar regions. It will cover both the Arctic and Antarctica, take place from 2007-2008, and include many science and humanities disciplines. It will also reach out and educate the world’s peoples about the importance of polar regions. This is the fourth IPY; the first was in 1881. The University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of the Arctic will play many leading roles in IPY activities.

The National Science Foundation has launched a portal website to provide the general public and members of the news media with easy access to news releases, classroom resources, listings of museum and gallery exhibits, and catalogs of video and still images and other materials produced or supported by the federal government as part of the U.S. contribution to the International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2008.

The site, at http://www.us-ipy.gov, includes information on the IPY for a general audience as well as basic information for scientists interested in obtaining IPY funding from the U.S. government.
