The University of Alaska Press, a statewide university institution that publishes nonfiction about Alaska and the circumpolar north, has just published a ground-breaking volume on Alaska Native art. Including over 300 photographs of works by Alaska Natives, the volume is the first ever devoted exclusively to contemporary art. Molly Lee, curator of ethnology of the University of Alaska Museum of the North, has noted that the book is "brilliant and original" and showcases artists who are "too often neglected in scholarly studies."

Alaska Native Art, published after the tragic death of author Susan W. Fair in 2003, has been fifteen years in the making. Covering all of Alaska’s Native groups--Eskimo, Athabascan, and Northwest Coast--Alaska Native Art is a comprehensive resource and a beautiful addition to studies of Native art. Available from the University of Alaska Press: www.uaf.edu/uapress; hardcover $65.00.
