The Robert G. White Large Animal Research Station at the University of Alaska Fairbanks will be hosting tours of the facility through the remainder of summer, beginning July 16, 2002. Each Tuesday and Thursday at 1:30 p.m. visitors can get a closer look at the muskoxen, caribou and reindeer maintained at LARS for education and research.

The tours were cancelled last summer to prevent the possible spread of foot-and-mouth disease, a highly contagious viral infection of cloven-footed, hoofed animals.

Tour presenters include university faculty, graduate students and research staff who are specially trained in the biology of the animals. Visitors can expect unique and informative descriptions of the natural history and ecology of the animals, including the specialized adaptations that allow existence in the arctic year-round, as well as an overview of past and present research efforts at the station.

New to the station this year are specially built pens that allow visitors closer views of the animals.

The walking tour covers a distance of approximately one quarter mile and lasts about one hour. The tour will take place regardless of weather so visitors are advised to dress appropriately. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for students and free for children 6 and under.
