UAF is hosting an international conference, "Materials for Extreme Environments." The conference will take place Denali National Park August 22 and 23, 2002.

Universities, industry and national laboratories will present their work. Papers to be presented include: Durability of Buliding Materials in Iceland, Hakon Olafsson; Institute of Building Materials, Iceland; Advanced Materials and Processes for Competitive Sliding Sports Thomas G. Mathia, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Lyon, France; Low Friction Coatings George Fenske, Argonne National Laboratory; Electrolyte Materials Doug MacFarlane, School of Chemistry, Monash University, Australia; Friction and Wear of Microelectromechanical Systems in Harsh Environments Mike Dugger, Sandia National Lab.

The conference is sponsored by the Natonal Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Alaska Experimental Program to Stimulate Competative Research and UAF College of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics. H. Liang of UAF’s Mechanical Engineering Department and J. Johnson of Argonne National Laboratory are organizing the conference.
