CES Bethel/Yukon Kuskokwim District Hires New Home Economics/4-H Youth Development Agent

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service (CES) has appointed Lucy Bayles as Home Economics/4-H Youth Development Agent for the Bethel/Kuskokwim District.

In making the announcement, CES Director Tony Nakazawa said that Bayles’ extensive experience and educational background uniquely qualify her to serve the needs of individuals, families and youth in the Kuskokwim Region. Her expertise in the area of early childhood and parenting will broaden the scope of home economics programming.

Bayles comes to Alaska from Clemson, South Carolina. Prior to joining the CES staff she served as family life specialist at Clemson University and also at West Virginia University. She also has experience as an area extension agent in child and family development from the University of Missouri. Early in her career, Bayles served with the U.S. Peace Corps as an instructor in rural development/health/ and family life in Sarawak, East Malaysia.

Bayles has taught a broad range of higher education courses, including child development, health, early childhood education, marriage and family relations and cross cultural comparisons of families. She has also developed training materials and published curriculum for professionals and the public on "Stress, Health, and Coping," and "Parenting Renewal." Bayles will begin work in Bethel in October 2002. Her office will be located at the UAF Kuskokwim campus in Bethel.

CES, a unit of the UAF College of Rural Alaska, serves Alaskans through a series of 11 district offices around the state. Extension programs are designed to deliver practical research based information to citizens for use in their daily lives.
