Student enrollment is expected to rise for the third year in a row at the University of Alaska Fairbanks this fall. Although final figures will not be available until after Sept. 20, 2002 new admissions as of Aug. 26 are up 8 percent from last year. Among the new students this year will be 163 University of Alaska Scholars. The UA Scholars Program, initiated by UA President Mark Hamilton in 1999, gives $11,000 scholarships to Alaskans who graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school class and attend a University of Alaska campus.

The newly revitalized Brooks Memorial Mines Building is now open and features state-of-the-art classrooms, offices for six different departments, and a gathering room with a design that reflects the Alaska Native cultures served by UAF. Brooks has reopened with the consolidation of several related programs under one roof including the College of Rural Alaska, Rural Student Services, the Alaska Native Language Center and Alaska Native Studies.

Several other departments on campus have moved as a result of an effort to streamline services provided to students and as a result of ongoing construction. Information about departmental moves and construction on campus can be found here.

Classes start Sept. 5, but students can register through Sept. 13, either on the Fairbanks campus or at the Tanana Valley Campus downtown. The fall class schedule and instructions for registration can be found on the web here. In addition to being able to register for class, students can now perform more tasks online including purchasing textbooks, viewing grades and checking the status of their financial aid. A complete list of online student services is available.
