The University of Alaska Fairbanks Political Science department hosts a new class this fall focusing on the Middle East. Students will discuss contemporary political issues, governmental structures, political culture, state and nation building and foreign policy.
The course was developed in response to the events of Sept. 11, 2001 to aid in the understanding of the dynamics in the region. It will be geared toward the general public and classes will be held every Monday evening in the Gruening Building on the UAF campus.
The instructor, Hana Hasan, grew up in the Middle East. Educated in France, Jordan and Palestine, she has been a program development specialist for the United States Agency for International Development, posted in Israel, the West Bank, Gaza and Washington D.C. She has worked on economic development and state formation projects for Gaza and the West Bank, and has volunteered for refugee and peace education programs.
There is currently an enrollment cap of 10 on the course, however it may be raised to accommodate interested students.
