A record number of seven UAF School of Management students were selected for prestigious Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation internships this summer. In an unprecedented accomplishment, seven of 14 APFC internships outside of Alaska were awarded to UAF School of Management students. Student accepted positions with companies in locations across the nation from New York to Seattle.
Each year Alaska students and the APFC’s partner firms seek one another out through the APFC Internship Program. APFC interns must be an Alaskan resident attending a university in Alaska or Outside. Interns are selected based upon GPA and the number of credit hours completed. The final internship selections are made after reviewing resumes and cover letters, and then conducting interviews. When asked about why she thought a record number of UAF School of Management students received summer positions, APFC internship coordinator Joan Cahill said, "The UAF students were highly qualified in terms of exposure to investing through School of Management program. The students have both personal skills and a strong sense of teamwork."
APFC partners find that internships are a great way to add value to their companies, and to also give the students invaluable experience. When asked about lessons learned, T. Rowe Price intern Jane Pittakkoshkorn said, "I learned about myself. I have a clearer picture of where I currently am in finance industry, and where I want to be in the future." According to Cahill, it is not unusual for job offers to follow an APFC summer internship. Typically somewhere around 20 percent - 25 percent of the interns are offered permanent positions.
