A rededication ceremony for the Brooks Memorial Mines Building will take place at the University of Alaska Fairbanks on Sept. 21, 2002 at 4 p.m. The newly revitalized building has reopened with state-of-the-art classrooms, offices for six academic departments and a gathering room with a design that reflects the Alaska Native cultures served by UAF. The rededication kicks off a week-long open house showcasing the programs now housed in the Brooks Building which include the College of Rural Alaska, Rural Student Services, the Alaska Native Language Center, Alaska Native Studies, Rural Alaska Honors Institute and the Department of Alaska Native and Rural Development.
The Alaska Native Language Center is celebrating its 30th anniversary and has invited author of the Koyukon Athabaskan Dictionary Eliza Jones; Catherine Peter, author and Gwich’in language specialist; author and St. Lawrence Island Yupik language specialist Vera Kaneshiro; and long-time ANLC coordinator Irene Reed. A public presentation sponsored by the Alaska Native psychology department will feature Native American leader and former chair of the Puyallup tribe Ramona Bennett. Additional events will take place during the week to showcase the programs housed in the Brooks Building.
