UAF students and alumni are preparing for a sizzling weekend at the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus as the annual alumni reunion gets underway. This year’s theme, Nanook Traditions: All Fired Up, is appropriate since this is the first year the reunion coincides with Starvation Gulch, a bonfire competition dating back to 1923. The reunion will take place Thursday, Oct. 3 through Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002.

The Alumni Awards Luncheon will take place Friday, Oct. 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Princess Alaska Riverside Lodge. Former Fairbanks city mayor James Hayes has been named this year’s Distinguished Alumnus. Alumni Achievement Awards will go to Alyeska spokesperson Curtis Thomas for community service, Wildlife Biologist Vernon Bleich for professional excellence and Tip Top Chevrolet owner Robbie Giinther for university support. The William R. Cashen Service Award will go to Jeri Maxwell, manager of UAF’s Wood Center Pub, for her commitment to improving the quality of student activities at UAF and for her outstanding service to the UAF Alumni Association.

Building for the Starvation Gulch bonfires will take place Saturday, Oct. 5 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Taku parking lot. The bonfires will be lit at 10:30 p.m. Saturday following the UAF hockey game.
