The Arctic Region Supercomputing Center has received the first installment of $187,000 of a National Science Foundation grant awarded to support the center’s summer intern program, the Alaska Summer Research Challenge. The program has been run by ARSC since 1998 and allows students from minority-serving institutions to spend ten weeks over the summer living on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus and working with faculty and staff at ARSC.

Students complete projects in computer science, supercomputing or visualization, while working individually with mentors. Through their experience, students are encouraged to continue with post-graduate education or careers in these fields. Minority students, who are underrepresented in the field of high performance computing, are given preference in acceptance.

The grant will total over $300,000 of support for the program over the next three to five years.
