The University of Alaska Fairbanks is presenting its third annual Student Leadership Conference on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. This year’s theme is "Leadership is Action!" The goal of the conference is to prepare students for their future roles as leaders in their communities, workplaces, families and school environments through the application of leadership abilities.
Keynote speakers include Alaskan dog musher and author Mary Shields and author Tim McMahon. Shields is the first woman to finish the Iditarod sled dog race. She will speak on the qualities of a good lead dog as they relate to human leadership. McMahon will share insights from his book "Exploring Leadership: For College Students Who Want to Make A Difference." Other session topics include "Perception, Culture and Leadership," "Leadership and the Art of Facilitation: How to be a Neutral Third Party," "Commitment to Excellence" and "Leadership and Ethics." The sessions will be presented by community leaders including local attorney Randy Clapp, Tanana Valley United Way Director Terry Strle, UAF Professor of Communication Jin Brown, UAF men’s basketball coach Al Sokaitis and several UAF student leaders.
Childcare for attendees will be provided by the UAF Tanana Valley Campus. Students can register at the student activities office in Wood Center. A $10 registration fee is being used to support the UAF Emerging Leaders Scholarship fund.
