The International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks will be hosting the 3rd International Workshop on Global Change: Connection to the Arctic 2002 Nov. 4 - 6. The goal of the workshop is to formulate joint, multidisciplinary research projects between Japanese and American scientists in order to advance understanding of the Arctic’s role in global climate change.

Fifty researchers from Japan and the U.S. will participate in the workshop. Topics for discussion will include climate change detection and modeling, and studies related to oceans, sea ice, glaciers, permafrost, volcanoes, tectonics, greenhouse gases, space weather, and more.

Previously, two workshops were held at Sendai, Japan in 2000 and at Sapporo, Japan in 2001. Through these meetings, crucial climate change research topics were identified and the importance of this integration effort was recognized.

IARC was established jointly by the governments of the U.S. and Japan in order to study Arctic climate change, global warming and to predict future changes.

NOTE: A fact sheet about global climate change that will be available at the workshop can be accessed online.
