University of Alaska Fairbanks Chancellor Marshall Lind has named Mark Neumayr as vice chancellor for administrative services, overseeing UAF’s budget, business operations, purchasing, personnel, risk management and environmental health and safety office, fire and public safety departments, and facilities services.

Mark Neumayr Neumayr has been with the university since 1982, serving as interim vice chancellor since March and in a variety of positions in the general counsel’s office including senior associate general counsel.

Neumayr was one of three finalists for the position recommended to Chancellor Lind last week by the committee overseeing the vice chancellor search. The other finalists were Jim Holt, former Fairbanks North Star Borough School District superintendent and Maj. Gen. Philip Oates, Adjutant General for the State of Alaska and Commissioner of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

"UAF is fortunate to have such a high caliber of individuals selected as finalists," said Chancellor Lind. "Our ability to attract top people is a plus for UAF, but it made my job very difficult because we had three extremely strong candidates, each with a fine set of credentials. It was a tough decision, but Mark has demonstrated excellence in the job over the past nine months. I believe Mark is the best fit for the position at a time when UAF is experiencing growth and expansion of our facilities and programs."

As UAF’s chief financial officer, Neumayr is responsible for developing the university’s budget request and oversees the largest state-owned physical plant in Alaska.

"I’ve enjoyed working at the university," said Neumayr. "I’m pleased to be asked to stay at UAF. People I’ve been working with are great and it’s exciting to be involved first-hand with the innovative instructional and research programs taking place here."

Neumayr received degrees in business administration and in law from the University of South Dakota. Prior to coming to the University of Alaska, he was an attorney with a corporation dealing with banking, finance and real estate.

Neumayr takes over the position formerly held by Frank Williams, who in March returned full-time to his duties as director of the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center. Williams had held a dual appointment as ARSC director and administrative services vice chancellor since 1999, and an interim appointment as UAF’s chief financial and budget officer following the June 1998 retirement of former administrative services vice chancellor Michael Rice.
