COLORADO SPRINGS - University of Alaska Fairbanks senior Matt Emmons has been named USA Shooting’s male Shooter of the Year for 2002. Emmons, an accounting major from Browns Mill, N.J., is a four-year member of UAF’s national championship rifle team. In 2002, Emmons enjoyed what’s being hailed as the best performance by any American male shooting sports athlete in the past several decades.

Beginning with the NCAA smallbore rifle title in the spring, Emmons added a gold medal and an Olympic quota place at the International Shooting Sports Federation World Cup in 3 x 40 rifle. He almost swept the U.S. National Championships in Atlanta, winning two gold medals and a silver in the three rifle events contested. Emmons also won a gold medal in men’s prone, along with team silver and bronze medals in 3 x 40 and air rifle at the ISSF World Shooting Championships in Lahti, Finland. Finally, Emmons won a gold medal in 3 x 40, and a silver in prone rifle at the invitation-only ISSF World Cup in Munich.

USA Shooting is recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) and the ISSF as the national governing body for Olympic and international shooting sports in the United States. International shooting includes more than two dozen different events for both men and women in four different disciplines; pistol, rifle, shotgun and running target.

Currently, 17 of these events are part of the Olympic shooting sports program located in Colorado Springs, Colo. USA Shooting trains and selects the national shooting team, which represents the U.S. throughout the year in major international competitions including the Olympics, World Championships, Pan American Games, Championships of the Americas and at ISSF world cups.
