Panel Discussion on Indigenous Rights and Native Sovereignty

A public panel discussion on Indigenous Rights and Native Sovereignty will take place Monday, March 10, 2003 in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom at 7 p.m.

Panelists will include: Trefon Angasan, co-chair of the Alaska Federation of Natives; Dalee Sambo Dorough, Inuit Circumpolar Conference; Arctic Village Chief Evon Peter; and Phyllis Fast, UAF Alaska Native studies chair. Mary Ehrlander, assistant director for UAF northern studies program, will introduce the panel and George Charles, assistant professor of Alaska Native studies, will moderate the discussion. Opportunity for informal discussion and questions will follow formal presentations by the panelists.

The public panel is part of UAF’s activities as one of only 10 U.S. institutions competitively selected by the Association of American Colleges and Universities, AAC&U, to participate in the Global Citizenship: The Arts of Democracy project supported by the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education in the U.S. Dept. of Education. The Arts of Democracy project is part of an AAC&U initiative on Shared Futures: Learning for a World Lived in Common.

UAF’s project team is lead by Norm Swazo, professor of philosophy and humanities. Members include: George Charles, Alaska Native studies; Mary Ehlrander, northern studies and history; Karen Erickson, political science; David Koester, anthropology; Joy Morrison, UAF faculty development.
