UAF Journalism Students Publish Extreme Alaska Website

The 2003 Iditarod re-start from Fairbanks and stories of Goldstream Valley are the subjects of the latest editions of Extreme Alaska, an online periodical published by University of Alaska Fairbanks journalism students. To see their work in text, photographs, audio and video, visit www.uaf.edu/extreme/.

The website also features Extreme Alaska’s first edition published in fall 2002. In a three-part series, students focused on the intensity of life in Alaska, including everything from a photo essay on the state’s distinctive architecture, to an in-depth look at how Fairbanks care providers deal with the city’s chronic inebriates, to a Flash presentation of a student pig roast on the frozen Tanana River.

This academic year, Extreme Alaska student producers are taking individual studies. Eventually, all staff members will be students in a new course, "Online Publication: Extreme Alaska," which will eventually become a capstone course required of all journalism majors. Every semester, students in the course will create at least one new edition using material from other journalism classes as needed.

The site is produced in the department’s new, state-of-the-art, multimedia newsroom.
