The University of Alaska Fairbanks will host a reception and awards ceremony in honor of its NCAA championship rifle team Wednesday, April 23, 2003. The reception will be held in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom from 4:30 - 6 p.m., with the awards program beginning at 5:20 p.m.

The rifle team won its fifth consecutive NCAA title in March, setting national collegiate records in smallbore (1570) and aggregate scoring (6287). Only West Virginia has won more consecutive titles than the Nanooks, capturing six between 1988-1993 before the streak was broken by UAF’s first national crown in 1994.

Nanook shooters earned nine National Rifle Association first-team All-American honors based on their scores throughout the season, with an emphasis on the NCAA sectionals. The NRA also takes into consideration their grade point averages. UAF has fielded a rifle team since 1937. In 1980, rifle was re-organized into an NCAA-recognized and sponsored sport.
