More Than Five Dozen Awards Served Up With Breakfast

Biology major Britt Arnesen will receive the Marion Frances Boswell Memorial Award for outstanding senior woman. Arnesen made the Dean’s List for academic achievement every semester while attending UAF except her final semester when she was named to the Chancellor’s List. While at UAF, Arnesen has immersed herself in different disciplines, doing research in ecology, anthropology, molecular biology and archaeology. She is currently doing research in UAF’s molecular microbial ecology lab and plans to continue this work as part of a graduate program in ecology at UAF.
Jeremie D. Smith, an electrical engineering major, is the recipient of this year’s Gray Tilly Memorial Award, given to the outstanding graduating non-traditional student. Smith began college later in life after starting his family. While in college, Smith has been active in community service, volunteering his time with KUAC, Golden Key Honor Society and Tau Beta Phi, a national engineering honor society. This semester he began working towards a master’s degree in engineering management.
Two UAF employees will also be recognized at the event for continued student advocacy this year. An outstanding faculty award will be presented to Gary D. Adkins, Independent Learning Program mathematics instructor, and Jeff Stepp, student activities coordinator, will receive the outstanding staff member award.
Outstanding student athletes being recognized are Matt Emmons from the rifle team and Sigrid Aas from the cross-country running and skiing team.
After the university achievement awards are presented, deans and directors will recognize students by colleges and professional schools.
In the School of Education, Dawn Stephenson will be recognized in elementary education and Alberta Demantle in rural elementary education.
In the School of Mineral Engineering, Lauren Staft will be recognized for geological engineering, Isaac Rowland for mining engineering and Robert Mielke for petroleum engineering.
In the School of Management, Catherine Persinger will be recognized for accounting, Buffy O’Hara for business administration and Michael Backus for economics.
In the School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences, Cody Burgess will be recognized for work in forest sciences; Robert Wiskeman for geography; Matthew Dusenbury for plant, animal and soil sciences; and Michael Gibson for resource management.
The School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences will recognize Pamela Lestenkof in fisheries.
UAF’s College of Rural Alaska will recognize Wanda Griechen from the Bristol Bay Campus, Gladys Pungowiyi from the Chukchi Campus, Julia Ann Walker from the Interior-Aleutians Campus, Audrey Johnson from the Kuskokwim Campus, Katherine Kokeok from the Northwest Campus and Gerene L. Sumpter from rural development.
From the Tanana Valley Campus, department recognition will go to Ruby Kibbee in applied accounting, Mark Hanson in applied business, Tammy Asher in allied health, Joseph Brown in aviation maintenance technology and Francine Rose in culinary arts. Lisa Smart will receive recognition in early childhood education, Will Bower in emergency services, and Matthew Hampton and Barbara Charlene Smith in human service technology. TVC will recognize Eric Yauney from the microcomputer support specialist program, Poppy Hochstetler in office management and technology and Randi G. Kile in paralegal studies.
The College of Science, Engineering and Mathematics will recognize Alice Velsko in biological sciences, Adrienne Orr in chemistry and biochemistry, Rachel Armstrong in civil and environmental engineering and Donald Bahls in computer science.
Other outstanding CSEM students include Adam Vogel in electrical and computer engineering, Beth Caissie in geology and geophysics, Timothy Estesen in mathematics, Lee DeWilde in mechanical engineering, Justin Carstens in physics, Eric Wahrenbrock in statistics and Ryan Long in wildlife biology.
In the College of Liberal Arts, Amy Van Hatten will be recognized in Alaska Native languages and Pearl Brower in Alaska Native studies. The College of Liberal Arts will recognize Rowan Beraza in anthropology, Valerie Cline in art, Carla Pope in communication, Timothy Murphrey in English, Virginia Schlichting in foreign languages, Matthew Casort in history and Curt Merrill in journalism.
Also recognized by the CLA are Melissa Liller in justice, Bradley Giese in linguistics, James M. Price in military science, Frances McCaleb in music, Diane Scoboria in northern studies, Louis A. Gross in political science, Corrie B. Whitmore in psychology, Anise Masterson in social work, Sarah Lewis in sociology, Shannon Colburn in theatre and Sally Rafson in women’s studies.
The awards breakfast will begin at 9:30 a.m. Joe Hayes, the executive director of the UAF Alumni Association will serve as the master of ceremonies. A separate awards program will take place in the Hess Rec Center April 24 at 4:30 p.m. to recognize students for their achievements and community service outside the classroom.
A number of students will also be recognized for graduating with leadership honors.
