University of Alaska Fairbanks Athletic Director Cory Schwartz announced today that Lynne Andrew has been hired as the new head women’s basketball coach at UAF.

"I am very excited about the opportunity to be the next women’s basketball coach at UAF and can’t wait to build a championship program that the university and the community can be proud of," Andrew said.

Andrew has previously been the assistant women’s basketball coach at Division I universities Idaho State, Weber State and Montana State and Division II University of North Dakota. Andrew received her master’s degree in athletic administration from Idaho State University and her bachelor’s in physical education from Montana State University. As a player, Andrew’s career highlights included Kodak District 7 All-American and women’s National Invitation Tournament All-Tournament Team honors in 1988 and nods from the Big Sky First Team All-Conference in 1987 and 1988. She also spent a season in Europe with the West Germany Professional Basketball League 1989-1990.

"Lynne’s passion for basketball is contagious. We are looking forward to what her experience at the Division I, Division II and international levels, both as a player and a coach, will bring to our program. She will be a great fit in our department and the community," Schwartz said.

The search for a new women’s basketball coach began in March when Jenny Benson resigned after nine years as head coach of the Lady Nanooks.

Andrew is expected to start her new position on July 7.
