McBeath Named Fulbright Scholar

Jerry McBeath Political scientist Jerry McBeath has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture at China’s Foreign Affairs College during the spring semester 2004. McBeath, a professor of political science at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, is the first Alaskan in the history of the exchange to be granted a scholar award in the People’s Republic of China.

He will teach courses in U.S. foreign policy and international relations to graduate students at the Foreign Affairs College in Beijing. The college is the sole institution of higher learning affiliated with the Chinese Foreign Ministry. McBeath will also lecture on U.S. government and politics throughout China and conduct research on China’s environmental policies.

The Fulbright program, America’s flagship international educational exchange activity, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Recipients of Fulbright Scholar awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement and because they have demonstrated extraordinary leadership in their field of expertise. Among thousands of prominent Fulbright Scholar alumni are Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize-winning economist; Alan Leshner, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; Rita Dove, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet; and Craig Barrett, CEO of Intel Corporation.
