William H. Butler has been named Associate Director of the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Alaska Fairbanks. Butler, formerly with Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Jefferson County will begin his new position on September 22. He brings to Alaska CES an extensive background of agency administration, budget and fiscal management, public relations, and program development.

"As associate director for CES, Dr. Butler’s responsibilities will be to provide leadership for the day-to-day administration operations and human resource management for extension statewide," said Dr. Tony Nakazawa, CES Director. "We are fortunate to have someone of Butler’s academic background and experience to provide leadership for the Extension service."

Butler received his Ph. D. in Agricultural and Extension Education in 1989 from Pennsylvania State University, College of Agriculture. Besides his position at Cornell, Butler served as Executive Director at Northeast Tennessee Area Health Education Center, and Interim Director and Director of Grants for the Center of Rural Pennsylvania.

In talking about his new position Butler commented, "I am excited to be in Alaska working for the University of Alaska Fairbanks and Alaska Cooperative Extension Service. I look forward to getting to know and work with everyone at Extension."

Butler and his wife Odette have three children and they recently purchased a partially completed log home overlooking Fairbanks. The family looks forward to exploring the many recreational opportunities of Alaska.
