Earlier this year, an exhibit of photographs from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge generated national media coverage over their placement in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. On Thursday, Alaskans will have the opportunity to see the images first-hand as photographer Subhankar Banerjee describes his experience in the refuge in a lecture and webcast sponsored by the University of Alaska Museum. The lecture, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Seasons of Life and Land, will begin at 7 PM in UAF’s Davis Concert Hall. Admission is free.

"For all the discussion that these images have generated in Washington, DC and across the nation, I think it’s only fitting that Alaskans get a chance to see them and hear from the photographer himself," says Museum Director Aldona Jonaitis.

Banerjee’s lecture will take the audience on a photographic journey through the two years he spent in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, photographing the land and the wildlife in all four seasons. He will also share his experiences with the Gwich’in Athabascan and Inupiaq families he lived with during his time in the arctic.

Fairbanks author Debbie Miller and Inupiaq guide Robert Thompson will join Banerjee for portions of the presentation. After the lecture, Banerjee will sign copies of his book, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Seasons of Life and Land. The lecture is co-sponsored by the UAF Graduate School, the UAF Journalism Department and the Northern Alaska Environmental Center.

For those that cannot attend in person, the lecture will be broadcast over the Internet with help from UAF’s Center for Academic Technology. To view the webcast, visit the Museum’s web site at www.uaf.edu/museum and follow the link to the "Watch the webcast" under the Exhibits & Events heading. Viewers will need a media player, and the webcast will work best on faster Internet connections.
