University of Alaska Fairbanks psychology professor James Allen has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture at the Psychosocial Centre for Refugees at the University of Oslo in Norway through March 2004.

Allen will conduct research and lecture on international refugee mental health. He is one of three Fulbright Scholar grantees from UAF this academic year. Fisheries scientist Milo Adkison spent five months last fall at the National Council of Scientific and Technical Investigations in Puerto Madryn, Argentina, lecturing on natural resources management. Political scientist Jerry McBeath is currently lecturing at China’s Foreign Affairs College. McBeath is the first Alaskan in the history of the exchange to be granted a scholar award in the People’s Republic of China.

Recipients of Fulbright Scholar awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement and because they have demonstrated extraordinary leadership in their field of expertise. Among thousands of prominent Fulbright Scholar alumni are Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize-winning economist; James Watson, co-discoverer of the structure of DNA and Nobel Laureate in medicine; Rita Dove, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet; and Craig Barrett, CEO of Intel Corp.

Recent UAF Fulbright grantees include Laura Milner, professor with the School of Management, and James Ruppert, professor of English and northern studies and president’s professor of Alaska Native studies.

"The list of university faculty and staff who have received the Fulbright fellowship over the years is quite impressive," said Rich Seifert, energy specialist with the Cooperative Extension Service and two-time Fulbright scholar. "The university has hosted a number of Fulbright fellows as well."

The Fulbright program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
