The University of Alaska Fairbanks Campus landscape ad hoc subcommittee will unveil a draft of the campus landscape plan at the Wood Center mall Thursday, March 11, 2004 from 4-6 p.m.
UAF’s campus master plan, completed in 2002, is a comprehensive document calling for the development of several additional plans requiring in-depth analysis of specific areas. Subcommittees have been appointed to work on individual plans for circulation and parking, the north campus area and campus landscape.
Landscape is an important element of any college campus. In addition to beautification, landscaping can often be used to create continuity between buildings with different architectural style or to establish a sense of place. There are special challenges to effective landscaping at the Fairbanks campus, including the short growing season and a limited plant palette. The draft plan addresses these challenges, as well as many other aspects, including plantings, outdoor gathering and recreation areas, site furnishings and lighting, and areas of special emphasis, such as the Cornerstone Plaza.
University staff, faculty and students are invited to comment on the plan during the open house.
