Adam Powell, a 6’1", 225-pound left wing from Fairbanks, has signed to play hockey next year for the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

"We’re excited about Adam joining our program and we’re looking forward to him making a definite contribution," said Coach Guy Gadowsky. "Adam will bring a physical presence and a goal scorer’s mentality. He’s a big guy who’s aggressive and works very hard to get open in the offensive zone. Adam has a heavy shot and a knack for finding the net. He is a gifted scorer and should help us increase our offensive firepower."

Powell just finished his third year for the Chilliwack Chiefs of the British Columbia Hockey League and served this past campaign as the team captain. He completed the 2003-04 season with 53 goals and 36 assists for 89 points in 59 games. Powell, who was chosen first-team Coastal Conference for the 2004 BCHL All-Star Showcase, shared Chilliwack’s Most Valuable Player and Most Community Minded Awards and was selected the team’s final regular season number one star.

Before playing for Chilliwack, Powell played the 2000-01 season for the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in the Northern Pacific Hockey League. He played his prep hockey at West Valley High School in Fairbanks for UAF volunteer assistant coach Shawn Lundgren.

Powell is the first announced spring UAF signee and joins six other recruits who signed with the Nanooks during the early signing period. The other future Nanooks include: Darcy Campbell, a 5’11", 175 pound defenseman from Airdrie, AB; Kyle Greentree, a 6’3", 200 pound left wing from Victoria, BC; Aaron Lee, a 6’0", 180 pound forward from Calgary, AB; Ryan McLeod, a 5’10", 175 pound right-handed shooting center from Fernie, BC; Ryan Muspratt, a 6’0", 190 pound right-handed center from Calgary, AB; and Wylie Rogers, a 5’10", 160 pound goaltender from Fairbanks.

The Nanooks finished the 2003-04 season with a 16-19-1 overall record and a 14-13-1 in the prestigious Central Collegiate Hockey Association. UAF finished sixth in the regular season standings and hosted the first round of the CCHA playoffs. For more information visit gonanooks.com.
