UAF Reserve officers Training Corps (ROTC) announces commissioning their class of 2004 Officers at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 8 in the Davis Concert Hall.

The Guest Speaker will be Chancellor Marshall Lind, and Major General Alan Wayne "Bud" Thrasher the Commanding General of Cadet Command, Ft Monroe, Va. will administer the oath of office.

Commissioning is the culminating event for ROTC cadets as they become Second Lieutenants in the United States Army.

A commissioned officer, is a leader and manager in the Army who holds grade and office under a commission issued by the President of the United States.

An individual who has been appointed to the grade of second lieutenant or higher is a commissioned officer. The ranks, in order of progression, of commissioned officers are second lieutenant, first lieutenant, captain, major, lieutenant colonel, colonel, brigadier general, major general, lieutenant general, general and general of the Army.

A commissioned officer’s primary function is to plan and conduct training and military operations and supervise soldiers. An officer must have a baccalaureate degree in order to be commissioned.
