Nobel Prize-winning economist to visit UAF

Vernon Smith, winner of the 2002 Nobel Prize for economics, will visit the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus Tuesday, April 27. He’s scheduled to speak with students and faculty and deliver a public lecture in Schaible Auditorium at 7 p.m.

He will also address the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce general membership on "General Perspectives on a Healthy Economy" at the Westmark Hotel Gold Room at noon. Smith is the Rasmuson Chair in Economics at the University of Alaska Anchorage for the 2003-2004 academic year. He’s working with UAA faculty exploring the potential application of experimental economics to issues relevant for Alaska.

He is past president of the Public Choice Society, the Economic Science Association, the Western Economic Association and the Association for Private Enterprise Education. Previous faculty appointments include the University of Arizona, Purdue University, Brown University and the University of Massachusetts. Smith has been a Ford Foundation fellow, fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and a Sherman Fairchild distinguished scholar at the California Institute of Technology. He is a fellow of the Econometric Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Smith is professor of law and economics, a research scholar in the Interdisciplinary Center for Economic Science and a fellow of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. He has written or co-written more than 200 articles and books on capital theory, finance, natural resource economics and experimental economics.
