The University of Alaska Fairbanks will host a reception and awards ceremony in honor of its NCAA championship rifle team Friday, April 30, 2004. The reception will be held in the Wood Center Multilevel Lounge from 4:30-6 p.m.
The rifle team won its sixth consecutive--and seventh overall--NCAA title in March, with a combined smallbore and air rifle score of 6,273 out of a possible 6,400. Only West Virginia has won as many consecutive titles as the Nanooks, capturing six between 1988-1993 before the streak was broken by UAF’s first national crown in 1994.
Four Nanook shooters earned a total of seven National Rifle Association All-American honors based on their scores throughout the season. The NRA also requires that All-American nominees satisfy certain minimum academic requirements.
UAF has fielded a rifle team since 1937. In 1980, rifle was reorganized into an NCAA-recognized and sponsored sport.
