Stephen Jones selected as new UAF chancellor

University of Alaska President Mark Hamilton today named Stephen B. Jones of North Carolina State University as the new chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He and his wife Judy plan to be in Fairbanks by mid-July. UAF Provost Paul Reichardt will be acting chancellor during the break between the Linds’ departure and Jones’ arrival.

"After a comprehensive search and review by a search committee composed of distinguished UAF faculty, staff, students and community leaders, we are confident we have the right person for the job in Stephen Jones," Hamilton said. "He brings a terrific mix of academic strengths, strong community service and valuable experience in the business world. He’ll keep UAF on the right track."

Jones has been vice chancellor for extension and engagement at North Carolina State since 2001. In previous positions, he was director of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System at Auburn University and an associate professor and assistant director of the School of Forest Resources at Pennsylvania State University. He was at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, where he served as director of the Northeast Petroleum-Forest Resources Cooperative and as a visiting instructor. Prior to his academic career, Jones worked 12 years for the Union Camp Corp., a Fortune 500, multi-faceted paper and allied products manufacturer.

Jones’ research interests are primarily in the area of sustainable forestry. He received his Ph.D. in resources management from the State University of New York in Syracuse in December 1987. His bachelor’s degree in forestry is also from SUNY Syracuse and he holds an associate degree in forestry from Maryland’s Allegany Community College. Chancellor Jones’ annual salary will be $245,000, the national average for universities of the type and size of UAF.
