Doreen Fitzgerald, Alaska poet and writer, is to be the featured poet on the June 26 edition of public radio’s The Writer’s Almanac with Garrison Keillor. Keillor selected her poem, "Dog Days," to read on the air in his nationally distributed program about writers, words and poetry.

"Dog Days" is one of 67 poems recently published by the Ester Republic Press in the collection, Cake: Selected poems by Doreen Fitzgerald, which was released in April 2004.

Fitzgerald is a professional writer and editor who has won awards for journalism and other nonfiction writing projects. Her poems reflect her years growing up in Michigan, her life in Indiana, where she began writing poetry in earnest, and her time in Alaska, where she has lived and worked since 1980.

Fitzgerald is an alumna of Michigan State University, where she graduated in 1993 with a master’s degree in English. Born in Lansing, Michigan, she currently lives near Fairbanks, Alaska, and works as an editor and science writer for the School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Although her poetry has appeared in journals and periodicals, Cake is her first book.
