Reindeer Herding in Transition, a special 4-part series on the history and challenges of reindeer herding, will begin airing on Wednesday, July 8 at 8:20 a.m. during KUAC FM’s award-winning morning program Alaska Edition.

Produced by award-winning sound artist and writer Kathy Turco, this series is based on interviews conducted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ oral history department. Much of the work draws on work by UAF scientists participating in the Reindeer Herding in Transition project. Researchers from the Institute of Arctic Biology and the reindeer research program in the School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences at UAF worked with the Seward Peninsula reindeer herders to conduct the study.

Episode One: "The History of reindeer herding" airs Wednesday, July 7. Episode Two: "The heritage of herding in families" airs Wednesday, July 14. Episode Three: "The technology of herding" airs Wednesday, July 21. Episode Four: "The caribou crisis" airs Wednesday, July 28. All of the broadcasts will air at 8:20 a.m.

Episodes will also be posted to the KUAC website at www.kuac.org.
