The University of Alaska will host a news conference to announce major awards for biomedical research from the National Institutes of Health Monday, Aug. 16, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. in the biomedical laboratories on the 3rd floor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks’s new West Ridge Research Building, located behind the Elvey Building on UAF’s West Ridge. One award for $17.5 million will be used to hire faculty and conduct research, particularly in the areas of environmental contaminants and emerging infectious diseases. Another $1.75 million grant is continuation funding for the Center for Biomedical Research Excellence. To date, NIH has awarded more than $45 million for biomedical research at the University of Alaska.
Participants will include Director of the National Institutes of Health Elias Zerhouni, M.D., UA President Mark Hamilton, UA Associate Vice President of Health Programs Karen Perdue, UAF Chancellor Steve Jones and IDeA Networks for Biomedical Research Excellence Director George Happ.
