The University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Management will have a new dean when M. Wayne Marr assumes the post Sept. 1. Marr comes to UAF from Austin, Texas, where, as senior manager for Computer Sciences Corp, he specialized in performance measurement, transitions and strategic modeling. Marr and his wife, Barbara, arrived in Fairbanks in mid-August.
"Everyone involved with the search for a dean of the School of Management is enthused about the arrival of Wayne Marr," said Provost Paul Reichardt. "His varied experience in strategic planning and management is just what is needed as the school prepares to address a number of challenges and opportunities."
"I’m looking forward to marketing UAF’s management expertise and fostering an atmosphere of teamwork among faculty and staff," Marr said. "Prospects are excellent for graduates with top-notch management skills, and UAF has the programs to provide those skills. I am excited to be coming in as dean at this important juncture in the school’s development."
Prior to his position with CSC, Marr served as a member of the management team at Dell Project Office, TEK Solutions. In 1993, he co-founded Social Science Electronic Publishing and was its vice president and chief operating officer. In 1990, Clemson University named him first union professor of finance, a position he held until 1995. He was a professor of finance at Tulane University from 1986 -- 1990. From 1982 -- 1986 he served in a joint appointment with the Securities and Exchange Commission and Virginia Tech as a senior economist and associate professor of finance.
Marr received his bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry in 1977, a master’s degree in economics in 1980 and a Ph.D. in finance and statistics in 1983, all from Texas Tech University. His primary research interests have focused on corporate finance, financial markets and money and banking.
As dean of the School of Management, Marr will supervise academic programs offering bachelor’s degrees in accounting, economics and business administration, as well as master’s degrees in business and economics.
