The University of Alaska Fairbanks is gearing up for the fall semester. With a new chancellor and new programs, UAF is getting ready for the first day of classes, Thursday, Sept. 2. Here are some highlights:

Attending UAF in Fairbanks this fall will be 5,698 students, according to recent figures. The number does not include UAF’s six rural campuses, for which reliable numbers are not yet available. Registration continues through Sept. 10. For more student statistics, please visit our enrollment management website at www.uaf.edu/enroll/index.html.

Orientation for 600 of UAF’s newest students is Sunday, Aug. 29 through Tuesday, Aug. 31. This year’s theme is "Passport to your Future,"? integrating an international perspective. Register for orientation at Signers’ Hall or online at www.uaf.edu/orientation/fall/sign_up.html.

For a real outdoor bonding experience, new students can travel to the Castner Glacier in the Alaska Range, where the Outdoor Adventures Program will lead a 10-day wilderness experience to include rock climbing and glacier hiking. This year the team of students and instructors will attempt to summit Triangle Peak.

Scholarships: This fall math students with a minimum grade point average requirement of the mathematical calculation of pi, or 3.14, can apply for the new Jack Distad Memorial Scholarship. This is just one of 16 new scholarships established by private donors in recent months. For more scholarship information, visit www.uaf.edu/giving/scholarships/index.html.
