Joan Braddock, new dean of the College of Natural Science and Mathematics. The newly created University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Natural Science and Mathematics will have a familiar face at the helm with the appointment of Joan Braddock as dean. Braddock had been serving as interim dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Mathematics, which divided into CNSM and the College of Engineering and Mines earlier this year.

The appointment culminates a relationship of more than 30 years with UAF. Braddock graduated from the university in 1977 with a degree in biological sciences, followed by a master’s degree in microbial physiology in 1983 and a doctorate in oceanography in 1989.

After earning her Ph.D. Braddock was a research associate with the UAF Water Research Center. From 1990-1996 she became an assistant professor with the Institute of Arctic Biology and Department of Biology and Wildlife and adjunct assistant professor with the Water and Environmental Research Center. After receiving tenure in 1996 she was promoted to associate professor and was the department chair and graduate program coordinator for biology and wildlife from 1999-2001. Braddock then served as associate director of IAB from 2002-2003 before being named interim dean of CSEM in 2003.

"Throughout her career at UAF, from undergraduate student to interim dean, Joan Braddock has demonstrated her professional competence and dedication to the institution," said Provost Paul Reichardt. "Her selection as dean has received enthusiastic endorsement from everyone involved in the process, and we all look forward to her continued excellent contributions to UAF."

"I’m delighted to have everybody’s confidence and I’m looking forward to working with everyone in this outstanding college," Braddock said. "I’ve known some of my colleagues for 15 years. We know how to work together, both as scientists and teachers, and I love the synergy we have among the departments. There’s a lot of energy and collaboration going on, and it’s just a great place to be."
