Historian Lydia T. Black was honored this month in Anchorage, Alaska as Historian of the Year by the Alaska Historical Society. Black is professor emerita of the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the author of "Russians in Alaska, 1732-1867".

In selecting Black for the 2004 award, the Historical Society cited her landmark contributions to the history of Alaska and its Native peoples, exemplified by her recent book Russians in Alaska, published by the University of Alaska Press in March.

Russians in Alaska has been called "the finest survey of [the] topic in English"? by Journal of the West.
