Dental assisting students practice their skills.

Over the years Tanana Valley Campus programs such as dental assisting (above) play an important role in providing Alaska’s top industries with skilled employees. Demand for jobs in dental offices and clinics in the state is expected to grow by 84 percent by 2010. TVC will be able to better meet that need with the recent completion of a fully modernized dental clinic, located in the Tanana Valley Campus Center at 604 Barnette Street. The clinic, along with the rest of the facility, will be showcased at a community open house and 30th anniversary birthday party Oct. 21 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Tanana Valley Campus is celebrating its 30th anniverary Oct. 18-22, 2004, with a series of community seminars and events.

On Wednesday, Oct. 20, TVC Human Services Assistant Professor Bob Parr will present a seminar on "Tips for Dealing with the Winter Blues."? The seminar will give advice on how people can keep their spirits up when the sun is down, including examples of light box therapy. The seminar will be held from 12-1p.m. in room 203 of the Tanana Valley Campus Center.

TVC’s 30th anniversary week wraps up on Friday, Oct. 22, with a seminar on "Preparing Alaskans for Alaska’s Jobs: The TVC Process Technology Program."? The seminar will be presented by Jon Prater, assistant professor in the TVC process technology program, and will be held from 12-1p.m. in room 135D of the Hutchison Institute of Technology.

TVC first opened its doors to the public in 1974 as the Tanana Valley Community College. Over the years TVC has grown to become the fourth largest campus in the University of Alaska 16-campus system, with an enrollment of more than 3,000 students. The campus offers 40 certificate and associate degree programs in topics ranging from allied health to professional piloting.

In recognition of TVC’s anniversary, Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor proclaimed Oct. 18-22, 2004 as "Tanana Valley Campus Week."? For more information on TVC’s 30th anniversary celebration visit their website at www.tvc.uaf.edu or call 455-2857.
