For the second night in a row, the University of Alaska Fairbanks hockey team faced-off against Lake Superior State at the Taffy Abel Ice Arena. After a difficult 6-2 loss Friday night, the Nanooks pulled together and rallied to post a 2-0 victory and shut out over the Lakers.
Sophomore center Lucas Burnett (Rossland, BC/Trail-BCHL) put the Nanooks on the board first just 10 seconds into the third stanza with his first marker of the season, off a pass from senior defenseman Cramer Hickey (San Jose, CA/Minot-AWHL).
The Nanooks held on to their one-goal advantage for most of the period and then sophomore left wing Jordan Emmerson (Abbotsford, BC/Merritt-BCHL) increased the lead, with an empty net goal, just two seconds before the game clock would expire.
Wylie Rogers (Fairbanks, AK/Victoria-BCHL) bounced back from the Friday night loss, stopping all 27 of the Lakers shots to earn his third shutout of the season and improve to 4-1-0 overall.
"Wylie is extremely athletic and he’s still getting used to some of the saves he is capable of making,"? said UAF Head Coach Tavis MacMillan. "We played better tonight in front of him, but he also came up with the huge saves when we needed them."?
Both teams played with better discipline in Saturday’s match up, with the Nanooks earning 4 penalties for eight minutes to the Lakers 6-for-12.
"As disappointed as I was last night, I was equally as happy with tonight’s effort and results,"? said MacMillan. "We stayed the course and we were rewarded in the third period as a result."?
The Nanooks improved to 5-3-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the CCHA. They travel back to Fairbanks Sunday, and will have a week off before returning to the ice to face the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame November 26th and 27th. Face off will be at 7:00 p.m. both evenings.
