UAF skiing adds two recruits

FAIRBANKS, AK -- The University of Alaska Fairbanks’ cross country running and skiing team has added two student-athletes for next fall.

Twin sisters Julia and Anna Coulter from Traverse City, Michigan and Traverse City Central High School will join the Nanooks next fall. They will enter as freshman, with four years of eligibility.

Julia Coulter earned All-American honors when she finished second in the 3x5 kilometer relay at the 2004 United States Ski Association’s Junior Olympics. She also finished seventh in the 10k Classic event, and was ninth in the 5k Free Technique event, earning All-American honors as well in each of those disciplines. She was 16th in the 0.85 km Free Technique Sprint.

In 2003, Julia was second in the 3x5 km relay and third in the 10k Free Technique, earning All-American honors twice. She was 17th in the 5k Classic, and 29th in the Free Technique Sprint. She was also a member of the team that finished second at the 2004 Michigan Cross Country Championships (running).

Anna Coulter earned All-American honors twice at the 2004 U.S. Ski Association’s Junior Olympics, finishing second in the 3x5 k relay, and 10th in the 5k Free Technique. She was 28th in the 0.85 Free Technique Sprint, and 34th in the 10k Classic. In 2003, Anna earned All-America honors in the 3x5 k relay and the 10k Free Technique by finishing second in each event. She was 14th in the 5k Classic, and 26th in the Free Technique Sprint. She also ran cross-country, and her team was second at the Michigan Cross Country Championships.

UAF Head Coach Scott Jerome was pleased with the signings. "Julia is a true gem,"? said Jerome. "She has proven her ability on the national stage with her results in the Junior Olympics. Julia will provide our team with much needed depth on the women’s side. She has the tools to develop into one of the nation’s best collegiate skiers. I am very happy that Julia will be a Nanook next season."?

Jerome was equally pleased with Anna’s signing. "By placing in the top ten at the U.S. Junior Olympics, Anna has proven she has what is takes to ski for the UAF Nanooks,"? said Jerome. "I am very pleased that Anna will be joining the team. She will add to our overall depth. She certainly has the potential to develop into one of the nation’s top collegiate skiers in her time here."?
