The University of Alaska Fairbanks women’s basketball team has signed its first recruit for next year.

Cristina Bruketta, a 5-8 guard from Ellensburg, WA and Kittitas High School, has signed a letter of intent to join the Nanooks for the 2005-06 season. She will enter UAF next fall, and will have four years of eligibility.

Bruketta earned All-State honors twice and was named All-League three times at Kittitas HS, and was also chosen three times to play in the Media Classic. During the first three years of her high school career, Bruketta averaged 18.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 48 per cent from the field. She also lettered as a volleyball player in each of her first three seasons at KHS, and was the district champion and qualified for the state meet in the discus while competing in track and field her freshman year.

A good student, Bruketta was a member of the Honor Society in both 2002 and 2003. She has been a member of the Future Farmers of America in each of her high school years.

"Cristina will be a perfect fit for our program,"? said UAF Head Coach Lynne Andrew. "She brings with her a great perimeter shooting game, and she is also an aggressive defender. She is a great three-point shooter, she can handle the ball, and she is a very hard worker. Cristina will do whatever she has to do to stop her opponent. I’m glad to have her join our program, and if her team does well and makes state, I look for her to receive further honors."?

Bruketta was pleased to be coming to Alaska Fairbanks. "I’m very excited,"? Bruketta said. "I wanted to go somewhere where I could have a good time, not only on the court, but also as part of the team. The people on the team were very friendly and the campus was very nice. Coach Andrew came to my house for dinner, and her coaching style really appealed to me, and that was a big help in my decision."?
