Planning for the future of the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus continues. The Campus Life Master Planning Committee is sponsoring a series of informational forums to provide an opportunity to find out what’s being considered for student services and related facilities.

Last spring the consulting group Brailsford and Dunlavey conducted a survey of staff, faculty and students and, based on their suggestions, developed a draft plan that includes an expansion of Wood Center and Constitution Hall. The plan includes the possibility of enhancing the Wood Center by adding a coffeehouse, quiet study areas, more meeting room space and student organization support space to help further establish the building as a central gathering point.

In addition, the bookstore would be relocated in the Wood Center and nearby Constitution Hall remodeled to provide an expanded area for clubs and student organizations. To enhance both function and accessibility, the plan proposes a physical connection between the two buildings.

"We’re looking for ways to take the existing buildings and services and enhance the overall student experience," said Tim Barnett, dean of student affairs. "We’ve asked students what they expect from a campus center and have developed a concept."

The consultants also reviewed options for future student housing, site options and possible architectural designs. The survey showed that students tend to prefer suite-type housing with private rooms, small kitchen facilities and living and study areas. UAF currently has very little of this type of housing available.

The open forums are scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 7 from 1-2 p.m. in the Wood Center; Wednesday, Dec. 8 from 9-10 p.m. in the Hess Rec Center; and Thursday, Dec. 9 from 1-2 p.m. in the Wood Center.

A student subcommittee has been organized to provide information about the project.
