This March, the University of Alaska Fairbanks rifle team will try to go where no NCAA rifle team has gone before.
Friday evening, they’ll be recognized for what they have done.
The Nanooks will be going for their seventh consecutive NCAA rifle championship this spring. UAF and West Virginia are currently tied for the record for consecutive rifle titles with six each, and a Nanook victory this spring would break the tie and make UAF the record holder.
This Friday, the rifle team will be recognized after the first period of the hockey game against Michigan State at the Carlson Center. Members of the current team will be introduced, and the team will be recognized for having won six consecutive NCAA rifle championships.
The Nanooks won their first NCAA rifle championship in 1994. They have followed up by winning each championship since the 1999 season.
"It’s always nice to get out there on the ice and be recognized,"? said UAF Head Coach Glenn Dubis, who has coached the Nanooks to their last two championships. "It’s a big forum, and it gives people a chance to come out and support us."?
The rifle team will host Nebraska Saturday and Sunday at the Horton Range in the Patty Center.
