The University Police Department is investigating an early morning incident during which an unidentified man brandished a firearm after a UAF custodian refused to let him into the Butrovich Building. The incident occurred around 2 a.m., Monday, Feb. 14. When the custodian would not open the door the man pulled out a handgun and used it to bang it on the window. The custodian ran away and called campus police. No forced entry was made and no one was injured. The incident is being investigated and anyone with information should call the police.

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 6 feet tall, clean-shaven with light-colored eyes. He was wearing a dark-colored stocking cap and a distinctive jacket. The Columbia style coat was yellow with gray stripes running full length from the inside of the sleeve to the armpit and down to the waist.

Students, staff and faculty are reminded to exercise safety precautions: keep residence halls and rooms locked, and use the buddy system or police escorts. Anyone who feels threatened or observes suspicious circumstances should contact police at 911 and follow basic safety tips to help reduce risks. Security escorts are available on the Fairbanks campus 24 hours a day by calling (907) 474-7721.
